Communities of Care Show Up in Wondrous Ways

Hope – Peace – Joy – Love. These are more than the watchwords of the season. They are guiding lights that have illuminated El Nido.

On December 13th, volunteers from various communities came together to host a Holiday Party for families of El Nido. The Catholic Daughters of Santa Sophia, members of the Transitional Housing Committee, the youth group of Mission Hills UCC, and the San Diego Woman’s Club brought food, decorations, games, and gifts for the children of El Nido. Current families and alumni families filled the hall graciously offered by our hosts at Blessed Sacrament. The event provided current residents an opportunity to meet with the people, organizations, and congregations who are lovingly encouraging them on their journey at El Nido. The apartment sponsors were able to meet the residents and El Nido alumni who could offer a hopeful glimpse of a new life after the program. After dinner, the evening included a few carols and a visit from Santa to pass out presents with joy (Many thanks to Aline!).

On December 15th the youth group at Foothills United Methodist Church along with members of the Transitional Housing Committee brought Christmas trees and decorations for all of the units at El Nido. Lights, tree toppers, and presents under the tree filled each apartment with undeniable evidence that these families are cared for.

After the holidays, El Nido staff met with the families to talk about their seasonal experience at El Nido. Here is what the families had to say:

"My children and I are very thankful for all of the nice gifts, it was more than we could have expected and my kids were so happy to have gifts around the tree

Thank you to the volunteers who provided us with such nice gifts this holiday, we were so happy and emotional to receive so much and felt very loved

Muchas gracias por todo el amor que recibimos esta Navidad, por nuestros regalos y por nuestro arbolito de Navidad, mis ninas estaban muy Feliz, gracias por todo su apoyo

"From the Christmas tree, gifts, handmade stockings and toys and food for our holiday meal, we are so thankful for so many blessings and to have so many people care about me and my children

Hope – Peace – Joy – Love. These realities we get to embody for others and share with those in need.
